We have verified the information reaching us that fire destroyed data center and damaged another at the OVH campus located in Strasbourg, France. OVH web host which is one of Europe’s biggest host server says its staff are safe after the strange fire outbreak . Although all four data centers at the campus are currently offline this morning, the company is working relentlessly to restore them as soon as possible.

“Firefighters were immediately on the scene but could not control the fire” founder, chairman Octave Klaba said on Twitter. He said the plan for the next couple of weeks would include rebuilding the centres’ equipment and checking their fiber optic connections.

However, Klaba later reported that “everyone is safe” and the fire had destroyed the SBG2 structure plus part of the adjacent SBG1 bulding.

Fires that consume an entire data server building in this manner are strange due to the industry’s use of data server fire suppression technology that is designed to detect smoke and then deploy suppressants to extinguish the fire and contain the damage an extent.

The CEO Klaba was on-site in Strasbourg Wednesday morning to provide updates to update customers via the micro blogging platform, twitter. He tweeted that 4 out of the 8 server rooms in SBG1 were damaged by the fire outbreak, but the network room was spared. He said all the servers in SBG3 were intact but offline because the campus has no power.

Klaba said OVH hopes to resume operations at the SBG1 and SBG4 data centers by March 15, with the SBG3 facility targeted to come back online on March 19th. OVH builds its own servers, and says it has inventory in its Roubaix facilities and plans to deploy 10,000 servers in the next 3 to 4 weeks to replace the gear lost in the fire.
